And so it is 1) time to wrap up the women’s basketball regular season and 2) MARCH, BAYBAY
By the end of day on Sunday of this week, the Big East women’s basketball regular season will have come to an end. We will also cross over into the hallowed halls of MARCH as of Saturday morning, so there’s a lot of reasons to start the excitement building up as we go through these next seven days. This also means that this is the penultimate What To Watch for the year, as next week will be the final week of the regular season for Big East men’s basketball. Where has the time gone???
Let’s talk about some highlights of the week, shall we?
Tuesday, February 25: Providence Friars at #21 Marquette Golden Eagles (6pm Central, FS1) — Is this a little MU bias-y because this is a Golden Eagles focused website? Sure, but also, if you’re a Big East neutral: Kiiiiiinda a big spot for Marquette to try to rope together a win over a team that they should beat on paper, right? Same for their road trip against Georgetown on Saturday, right?
Wednesday, February 26: Georgetown Hoyas at Connecticut Huskies (5:30pm Central, FS1) — Lost to Seton Hall, had to make a crazy rally to beat Villanova, got kicked around by St. John’s. We’re all a little bit curious about what UConn does next, right?
Wednesday, February 26: #7 St. John’s Red Storm at Butler Bulldogs (8pm Central, CBS Sports Network) — If St. John’s wins, they clinch a share of the Big East regular season title, which would be their first since 1992. That one was a three-way title with Seton Hall and Georgetown. If Creighton happens to lose at home to DePaul in a game on Peacock that starts at the exact same time, then the Johnnies will win their first outright Big East title since 1985. If not, they’ll get another try on Saturday when STJ hosts Seton Hall and Creighton goes to Xavier.
Thursday, February 27: #22 Creighton Bluejays at #5 Connecticut Huskies (6pm Central, CBS Sports Network) — Game of the Week for women’s basketball, and the primary reason why is obvious. The less obvious reason is because the Big East regular season title is on the line here. UConn hasn’t clinched a share yet, but they will clinch an outright title with a win here. The Bluejays can not clinch a share with a win, as both UConn and Creighton have one more game to play after this, but they can’t get to a share (or an outright title with help from Marquette on Sunday) without a win here.
Thursday, February 27: DePaul Blue Demons at Seton Hall Pirates (6pm Central, FloSports) — This game will probably determine who gets the #3 seed in the Big East tournament. Coming into the week, Seton Hall and Marquette are tied for that spot right now at 11-5, one game up on Villanova. Both SHU and MU play Xavier this week, and they will both be heavily favored to win. Cara Consuegra’s team closes the regular season with UConn, and it will be quite the shock if the Golden Eagles win on the road. Therefore, if the Pirates beat the Blue Demons at home, then Seton Hall gets to be the #3 and avoid UConn in the BET as long as possible. Jada Eads and Seton Hall beat DePaul by 17 on the road in the first meeting, so it would seem that fortune is in their favor.
Saturday, March 1: RV Creighton Bluejays at Xavier Musketeers (3:30pm Central, Fox) — Xavier’s NCAA tournament hopes are being held together with packing tape and pipe cleaners at this point. You wanna be in the field of 68? Win this game, the only one of the week. It won’t guarantee them a spot, but losing wouldn’t be good either.
Here’s the full Big East men’s basketball schedule for the week, with all times Central, as always.
