There’s a lot of Creighton on the highlights this week, largely because the men’s team gets UConn and St. John’s.
Well, now that Marquette men’s basketball is done playing the other three top teams in the Big East, it’s Creighton’s turn in the hopper this week. As far as MU attention goes, there’s two big games on deck for the women’s team this week, although it’s more “hey, let’s finish top half of the league” drama than it is “let’s win the league and get a top NCAA seed” drama.
Oh, and Geno Auriemma’s Huskies are playing another tippy-top non-conference game, too. Fun!
Here’s the big stuff going on this week!
Tuesday, February 11: RV Connecticut Huskies at #24 Creighton Bluejays (8pm Central, CBS Sports Network) — Congrats to the Bluejays on their ninth straight win. Beating Marquette means it’s time for them to go through their gauntlet against the other top three in the Big East. This game is UConn’s third game in that gauntlet, and they’re coming off getting turned off like a hose by St. John’s on Friday night.
Wednesday, February 12: Marquette Golden Eagles at Seton Hall Pirates (6pm Central, FloSports) — The Pirates keep chugging along in Big East play, only dropping games against Creighton or UConn. They had to hold off a fourth quarter rally from Marquette when they met in Milwaukee, but the Golden Eagles have lost two of three coming in here with both defeats coming on the road. A win by SHU would probably all but clinch the #3 seed in the conference tournament for them, while MU coming out of Walsh Gym with the W at least keeps the door cracked for Cara Consuegra’s squad.
Wednesday, February 12: Villanova Wildcats at DePaul Blue Demons (7pm Central, FloSports) — After starting out 4-1 in Big East action, the Blue Demons are on a skid of six losses in the last nine games. Going into the week, Jorie Allen & Co. are currently slotted in the standings as the best team that would play on the first day of the conference tournament. However, they’re just half a game behind a tie for fourth place, and yep, Villanova’s one of those two teams. VU has won every game not against UConn or Creighton in their last seven coming into this one.
Saturday, February 15: DePaul Blue Demons at Marquette Golden Eagles (2pm Central, FloSports) — Remember what I said about DePaul and playing on the first day of the conference tournament and the tie for fourth place? Yep, Skylar Forbes and the Golden Eagles are the other team tied for fourth at the moment. Big movement week in this area of the standings, that’s for sure.
Saturday, February 15: Georgetown Hoyas at #24 Creighton Bluejays (3pm Central, FS1) — The fact that this is the only Big East women’s basketball league game that’s on national television this week is a solid reason to highlight this on its own, but Creighton’s back in the top 25 and this is also the only game they’re playing this week. The Jays haven’t lost to a team outside of the AP top 10 at the time of the game since the opening game of the year.
Sunday, February 16: #7 Connecticut Huskies at #4 South Carolina Gamecocks (Noon Central, ABC) — As I write this, these are the top two teams in the BartTorvik.com rankings, and they’re in that order. The NET has them the other way around, SC at #1 and UConn at #2. I’m not saying the AP poll is wrong, but I am saying that this is a big deal. UConn took a road loss to Tennessee in non-con play last week, while South Carolina lost to Texas on Sunday for their first SEC loss since 2022. Both teams will have something to prove, to say the least.
Sunday, February 16: #24 Creighton Bluejays at #9 St. John’s Red Storm (2pm Central, FS1) — And here’s the last part of Creighton’s gauntlet. St. John’s has to get through a road game against Villanova on Wednesday before they get here, and given the Johnnies’ lack of elite offense, every game for them is a potential problem. Still, there’s a real chance that this one turns into a Big East regular season championship game with Creighton just one game in the standings behind RJ Luis and his teammates heading into the week.
