New week, new challenges for men’s and women’s basketball in the league, same as always.
Storylines are unfolding across the Big East left, right, and center as conference play continues to roll on. I’m going to highlight what appears to be the most notable games heading into the week, but with most of the action coming on Saturday and Sunday, there’s a real possibility that we’ll get suddenly developing stories by the time we get to the weekend, too.
Let’s get to the highlights, shall we?
Tuesday, January 7: RV Georgetown Hoyas at #7 Marquette Golden Eagles (7pm Central, CBS Sports Network) — Someone leaves this game with their first loss in Big East play, while the other team stands shoulder to shoulder with UConn as the last two unbeaten teams in conference action. The Hoyas have won five in a row coming in, including getting Syracuse and Seton Hall on the road, and they’ve won 10 of the last 11. MU is heavily favored, but they also haven’t been a shining star of making things easy on themselves in their last few games.
Wednesday, January 8: #9 Connecticut Huskies at Villanova Wildcats (5:30pm Central, FS1) — The Wildcats are 3-1 in league contests and have won seven of eight since starting out 3-4. UConn’s coming off a massive comeback at home against Providence that moved them to 4-0 in the Big East and undefeated since returning from the Maui Invitational. Winning at The Finn is still not a walk down Candy Cane Lane, as evidenced by last year’s UConn team surviving by just one point. If the Huskies can’t put the clamps on Eric Dixon….. well, let’s tune in and see, shall we?
Wednesday, January 8: DePaul Blue Demons at Seton Hall Pirates (5:30pm Central, Peacock) — DePaul has been spiraling since starting 7-0. Here, they get a road game against a team with the absolute worst offense in the Big East across the length of the whole season. Dealing with the Pirates’ defense won’t be fun for Jacob Meyer and company, but this is quickly turning into one of their last real chances for a Big East win this season.
Saturday, January 11: Creighton Bluejays at Seton Hall Pirates (Noon Central, FloSports) — No matter what, Faith Masonius and the Pirates come into this game with a 4-0 record, while Morgan Maly and the Bluejays have to get through a home game with Marquette on Wednesday in order to make this a battle of Big East unbeatens. I’m not saying that whoever comes out of this with the win has a true chance to topple UConn for the league title, but it’s still a good thing to keep that zero in the loss column as long as possible, y’know?
Saturday, January 11: #9 Connecticut Huskies at RV Georgetown Hoyas (1pm Central, TBD) — Heck of a week for the Hoyas, huh? Either Thomas Sorber et. al. come into this with a 4-0 mark in Big East play with a chance to knock off the only two ranked teams in the league in the same week and leave themselves alone in first place or they get a chance to rebound from a road loss and their first conference play loss by taking a home poke at the Huskies.
