It’s not just MU’s first consecutive victories in 2025, it’s Cara Consuegra’s first consecutive Big East wins.
I turned up at the McGuire Center just a shade too late to see the competitive portion of Marquette women’s basketball’s contest against Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday. Because of factors beyond my control, I sat down in my seat during the first quarter media timeout.
Marquette was up 14-6.
As it turns out, Georgetown had just broken a 12-0 Marquette run shortly before the stoppage that prompted the timeout. Then, Marquette scored the first eight points coming out of the break.
20-2 run.
22-6 lead.
At that point, all you have to do is play it even the rest of the way. Marquette did give up the final five points of the first period, but then they won the second quarter by three points, and then outscored Georgetown by 11 in the third. That’s a little bit better than playing it even.
Georgetown tallying up the first nine points of the fourth quarter didn’t even really matter in the big picture here. That only cut the margin to 16 at the time, 68-52. Marquette outscored the Hoyas 7-6 for the final six minutes and change, and that was that.
The wild part? Marquette wasn’t even truly elite on offense in this game. Yes, the Golden Eagles finished the contest shooting 55% from the field and a very silly 67% from behind the three-point line. When they got a shot up, it was going in more often than not. But you have to get those shots up to be elite, and because MU committed 21 turnovers, same as Georgetown, the Golden Eagles didn’t quite crack averaging one point per possession in this game.
And they won by 17 anyway because they are a very scary defensive team. Heck, you could even argue that MU just turned off the water where it mattered, as Kelsey Ransom put up 25 points on 21 shots and Ariel Jenkins had 16 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.
Lee Volker led the way for Marquette with 20 points, while Halle Vice added 19 and Skylar Forbes chipped in 18. Vice led MU in rebounding with eight, Volker tallied a game high six assists, and Forbes tied with Vice to lead the team with three steals. Forbes also had four blocks for a very slick all-around line.
