Is it you? Well, not unless you have an AVCA top 25 vote.
The good news for Marquette volleyball is that losing at home to #5 Creighton didn’t scare off all of the AVCA voters who had them in the top 25 conversation last week.
The bad news is that it did scare off some of them.
Honestly, that seems a little mean, unless you had Marquette at #25 and you just really liked Missouri enough to put them into the top 25 or something. Yeah, they lost at home, but it was to a ranked team that can honestly say that they’re a national championship contender. Seems unfair to harshly judge the Golden Eagles for that, but that’s what happened, as they’re down to just eight points worth of votes. That does mean at least two people are voting for MU, as you don’t get listed if you’re only on one ballot.
Eight points makes Marquette the unofficial #30 team in the country this week. They’re right in between Texas A&M with 14 points and a tie for 31st between South Dakota State and Noted Marquette Opponent Western Kentucky.
The top two spots in the rankings didn’t change this week, so Pitt is still #1 in the country and #1 amongst teams on MU’s schedule this year. The Panthers snagged 49 first place votes to beat out Nebraska for the top spot by a little less than 40 points.
Teams #3 and #4 flipped spots since last week, but Creighton remains #5 after beating Marquette. Wisconsin and Stanford also flipped spots so they’re still #6 and #7 in the poll, just in that order now instead of the other way around. Kansas took a drop this week, falling four spots to #12. Dayton rounds out the list of ranked teams on Marquette’s schedule, holding steady at #19 with their loss to the Golden Eagles as their only loss of the season.
I wonder if they’re mad about that.
Marquette returns to action on Friday when they kick off the last home weekend of the 2024 season. They will host Georgetown at 7pm on Friday and then Seton Hall on Sunday at 1pm, and both matches will be streamed on FloSports. The Hoyas dropped to 3-11 in Big East action with a loss to UConn on Sunday, while the Pirates are 5-9 in the league thanks to the three match winning streak that they are taking into Friday’s match with Creighton.
