The Golden Eagles even out at 2-2 on the year heading into another game against a ranked opponent.
Marquette men’s lacrosse did an awful lot right in their 15-7 win over Cleveland State on Saturday. They outshot the Vikings by at least five in every quarter, they forced a failed clearance at least once a quarter, they scooped up more ground balls than CSU, they had half as many turnovers as CSU, Marquette was even perfect on the day with an extra man by way of Cleveland State penalties, although they only had to go 1-for-1 to get there.
And yet……
The game was tied 4-4 as the clock passed the 10 minute mark of the second quarter, and Marquette led by just two, 6-4 at intermission. With 6:40 to go in the third, Joe Ginnetti tallied for the visitors, and that cut Marquette’s margin to just two, 8-6….. and the score stayed there ….. and stayed there…. and stayed there…… until there was less than two minutes left in the quarter.
Maybe that’s just a tell as to what kind of teams we have here, as both squads got obliterated by #1 Notre Dame already this year. Maybe even while MU was doing things right, they’re just right on pace with Cleveland State. Or maybe it’s just a situation where CSU goalie Justin Dalum finished with 13 saves and Marquette’s Lucas Lawas finished with nine. Maybe CSU just had better attempts than Marquette, and that’s all there is to it.
In any case, the final 16:35 of the game tilted the score to look more like a lot of the underlying stats. Noah Snyder decided to start stacking goals on top of his two assists already in the game, and he found the net twice late in the third, with his strike at the 1:34 mark going as his first collegiate goal.

Snyder scored again with 31 seconds left in the quarter, and then again at the 9:07 mark of the fourth for his first career hat trick. Bobby O’Grady popped one in the net in the meantime after CSU opened up the scoring in the fourth, so it was 12-7 Marquette after Snyder’s third. The Golden Eagles had THREE MORE GOALS left to score in this one, including Will Foster potting one with a man advantage with just over four minutes left.
7-1 run in the final 17 minutes for Marquette that makes that final score look a bit better than it had been going, at least in the scoreboard department. I guess it doesn’t matter when you get the goals as long as you get them?
Snyder was joined in a hat trick on the day by Carsen Brandt, and both men had two assists to get to five points. That’s not good enough to lead the team here, as Nolan Rappis had two goals and four assists for a game high six points.

Up Next: Marquette is 2-0 against unranked teams this season and 0-2 against ranked foes. Unfortunately, they’ve got a ranked team up next. They’ll hit the road and head out east next week Saturday for a contest against #15 Harvard. First draw is scheduled for 11am Central, and ESPN+ will have the streaming broadcast. The Crimson are 2-1 in the last eight days after beating then-#20 Providence, losing at home to a Colgate squad that was receiving votes, and then beating #6 Syracuse 15-14 on Saturday. I presume that’s going to keep them ranked even with the loss to Colgate, but we’ll have to wait and see, I guess.
