It is about that time of the year when teams are figuring out their rosters for the last leg of the season. The most recent Knicks news coming out of New York is that they are deciding to sign MarJon Beauchamp to a two-way contract. The Knicks are hoping that Beauchamp is simply a luxury they can develop on the bench, but history says Beauchamp could get more playing time than expected. Let’s take a look at the MarJon Beauchamp scouting report and Knicks history to see what kind of piece he could be for them moving forward.
New York Knicks Sign Former First-Round Pick With Potential
The Knicks’ MarJon Beauchamp Signing
Shams Charania dropped some Knicks’ news and reported the Beauchamp signing Monday night. Although Beauchamp was the 24th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, he has yet to find super solid footing in the league. The Knicks are hoping they’ve grabbed a young player that has untapped upside.
The Knicks are releasing Matt Ryan and Jacob Toppin from the roster, which made room for Beauchamp’s contract. Beauchamp was playing for the Clippers before being waived, but spent most of his early NBA career on the Milwaukee Bucks. Beauchamp’s career high was with the Bucks when he averaged 5.1 points per game in 13.5 minutes per game.

MarJon Beauchamp’s Scouting Report
HoopsHype.com has this written for their MarJon Beauchamp scouting report: “Tough wing with elite size and athleticism, but limited as a shooter… His jumper looks far from broken, however, so there’s potential he can become an acceptable shooter… Quick first step and savvy using picks… Those traits allow him to slash to the basket and finish well… Very good on-ball defender thanks to quick feet and great length… A menace on the offensive glass.”
This scouting report reads like the perfect New York Knicks role player. Beauchamp brings size and athleticism to the table, much like the Knicks’ wings, and his defensive potential likely has Tom Thibodeau drooling. Although we all know that Thibs likely will do everything in his power to keep Beauchamp off the court.
The Knicks Need Injury Insurance
Although their coach desperately refuses to play deep-bench players any minutes, Beauchamp may eventually need to see the floor. The Knicks are having a great season so far, but much of it has been with pretty solid injury luck. This is a lot like last season.
Last year, the Knicks crushed it during the regular season, only to flame out in the playoffs when the excessive miles put on them by their coach finally caught up. Thibs hasn’t seem to learn from last year’s playoff flameout, and he is once again running his starters into the ground with some of the highest minute totals in the league.
If Knicks start falling towards the end of the season again, this Beachamp signing could be more significant than it seems. The Knicks are hoping he won’t come into play, but history tells us there is a real chance they’ll need him.
