Giannis Antetokounmpo sits out for rest as Greece wins, 93-71
The march onwards towards a possible berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics continues apace for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Greek National Team. With Giannis catching a DNP-CD for rest purposes, the Greeks did well to dispatch Egypt, 93-71.
It appears Greece got off to a strong start, pushing their way to a nearly 15 point lead midway through the first frame. Egypt would reel things back in and won the second quarter, 26-22, but Greece found their footing immediately out of the halftime break and would eventually go on to have a lead as large as 24 points. Greece shot 12/27 from three (44.4%) while Egypt only managed to go 4/21 (19.1%). While Giannis took the night off, Kostas Antetokounmpo got a few garbage time minutes to score a bucket and grab three rebounds.
Overall, an apparently strong final group stage showing. The victory left Greece atop their group and will see them (and the Dominican Republic) advance into the knockout stages of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. They’re set to face Slovenia (who blazed through their group and put the beatdown on New Zealand, 104-78 behind a 36 point, 11 rebound, 10 assist outing from Luka Dončić) on Saturday, July 6th. Unlike Greece, Slovenia did fall to Croatia during group play, 92-108, and so are technically the weaker seed emerging from that group.
The expectation would be that Giannis will suit back up again for the elimination game. Should Greece be victorious, they’ll need to win one last game on July 7th against the victor of Croatia-Dominican Republic.
Good luck to Greece as we keep an eye on the results!
