We finish up with two former teammates in Portland
In our last piece of the day from Bucks Media Day at Fiserv Forum, we bring you the notable moments from the two former Portland Trail Blazers, Damian Lillard and Gary Trent Jr. Trent stepped up to the stage first, talking about what he remembers about coming into the league in 2019 and what his relationship was like with Dame after getting picked in the second round:
“When I first got into the league Dame was my vet. He showed me what a leader should be and how to handle your business. I studied everything about him when I was in Portland on and off the court. We talked this summer and…now we’re here” https://t.co/Op4knbb6xk

He briefly touched on his decision to come to Milwaukee instead of taking more lucrative offers elsewhere:
“I had different options, opportunities and money, but what Milwaukee had to offer me, the players here, my future and the opportunity to have a chance at winning, I couldn’t turn it down” https://t.co/j6Sa30HJTQ

It was clear from the get-go from how Trent spoke that putting himself in a winning situation was top of mind for him when he went into free agency:
Gary Trent Jr on his goals for the season:
“Be an energy giver instead of a taker, play high-level basketball, and win a championship. Everything that has been communicated to me is that the is the main focus.”#Bucks #FearTheDeer

Finally, here is what Dame had to say when on the mic. Perhaps because of his offseason workouts with an ultramarathoner, it was here where we heard the Media Day classic (get out your bingo cards) question about being in the best shape of one’s life:
“I’m very close, I don’t know if I can say in my life because when you’re younger its just easier. But I’m in good shape” https://t.co/9T4XtOSacM

If there was a theme to Dame’s first several answers, it was about how much better he feels both physically and mentally coming into training camp this year, as compared to last. To wit:
“My teammates and coaches are going to get the real version of me this year. I know what type of year I had and I know they type of summer I had and preparation I put in last year. They’ll get the real version of me this year and thats all I’ll say” https://t.co/hPNKNEUWOY

“I knew what to expect, I’m familiar with the coaches and my teammates, being able to prepare for everything to come and knowing I’m right going into it. Its just way, way easier and I feel much better coming into this season” https://t.co/Xb6Klo7zbI

“I know Giannis’ game now better than when I got here. And Doc, and Khris. We don’t have to go through it again this year like that” https://t.co/WabdExt4aK

Next, his thoughts on teaming up again with Gary Trent Jr.m dovetailing with some of Trent’s earlier comments. I thought Dame’s face lit up a bit when talking about his then-and-now teammate in a way I didn’t see from him last year:
“His belief in himself made me a believer in him. We got into the bubble and he was playing a lot of minutes for us. He was guarding everyone, making big shots, we put him on LeBron and we ended up beating them in game 1” https://t.co/4Hhj2uUyqr

“When the season was happening it just felt like a blur. I had a lot of things going on and it just took me being removed from it to look back and see it was a crazy year. It could be worse but that doesn’t mean its not hard” https://t.co/aiBqT2x1qZ

Neat to hear Lillard reminisce about a 20-year-old Trent. Finally, Dame’s thoughts on his partnership with Giannis and how they’ll be working on their chemistry:
“We (Giannis) had a conversation last year where it was just he and I at practice and I told him we just gotta get this together and he agreed. Its not so much practicing or working out together its just a communication thing and everything has been open since then” https://t.co/eBfzqJch3A

“I definitely feel more on the same page with him (Giannis) now than I did last year and we didn’t even work out together” https://t.co/G4EENpJrOz

And with that, the Bucks are off to Southern California for a few days on the campus of UC-Irvine. They’ll break camp and head to Detroit for their first preseason game on Sunday evening. Again, major props to our friend Justin Garcia for his lightning-quick transcription work. Follow him
