Milwaukee Brewers’ left-hander Thomas Pannone is expected to miss at least a month after suffering a torn flexor tendon in his last spring training appearance against the Guardians last Sunday.
Pannone, 31 in April, was a ninth-round pick by Cleveland in 2013 and made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Blue Jays. He’s made 50 MLB appearances across three seasons between Toronto and Milwaukee, pitching in one game for the Brewers in 2023.
He spent 2024 at Triple-A in the Cubs’ and Yankees’ organizations. While he disappointed for the Cubs (4.37 ERA across 90 2⁄3 innings), he had a good finish to the season with the Yankees’ affiliate, pitching to a 2.34 ERA across 61 2⁄3 innings with 49 strikeouts.
The Brewers brought Pannone back on a minor league deal back in November and he made three appearances this spring, allowing five runs (four earned) across 3 1⁄3 innings (10.80 ERA).
Per MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, Pannone will be shut down from throwing for at least a month, though it’s not expected that he’ll need surgery. Being on a minor league deal, it’s expected that Pannone will start the season in the minors with a chance to make it to the majors at some point this year.
In other injury updates from McCalvy, Aaron Ashby’s oblique injury isn’t as severe as initially expected, meaning he’ll be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks. Brandon Woodruff is set to make his spring training debut with the minor league squad later this week as he works his way back from shoulder surgery that sidelined him all of 2024.
