Garrett Mitchell responsible for the lone run
A day after the Brewers celebrated their postseason berth and NL Central crown, the post-celebration hangover hit on Thursday night. They were held to just two hits by the Diamondbacks as they lost, 5-1.
Early on, the pitchers matched each other well, keeping the game scoreless through four innings. Tobias Myers allowed three hits and one walk over those four innings, while the Brewers could only manage one hit off of Brandon Pfaadt.
That changed in the fifth inning. Myers walked Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo to put two runners on base. Corbin Carroll was up next, and he hit a ball toward Andruw Monasterio. What could have been a double-play ball was missed by Monasterio, deflecting into left-center field and allowing Moreno to score. Ketel Marte was up next, and he hit a long single off the wall in right to bring in Perdomo and move Carroll to third. That ended Myers’ day. He threw 93 pitches over four-plus innings and was tagged for three runs, but only one was earned. He also struck out five, walked three, and allowed four hits. The third run was an inherited runner that Aaron Ashby allowed to score on a sacrifice fly. Ashby finished off the fifth for Myers, striking out two as well.
Meanwhile, Pfaadt carved up the Brewers, just five days after the Brewers scored eight runs off of him. He allowed only two hits and struck out 12 in seven innings of work. The only run the Brewers could get off of him came in the seventh inning. Garrett Mitchell hit a two-out solo home run to give the Brewers a little life, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

That life would be extinguished pretty quickly. After Hoby Milner put together two scoreless innings, Joe Ross took the eighth. Ross allowed a one-out single to Christian Walker, then Pavin Smith hit one out to extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-1. Ross would only make it through 2⁄3 of an inning before being lifted for Enoli Paredes. He only threw 10 pitches, and three of those ended up being hits.
From there the Brewers wouldn’t have another baserunner. Paredes finished the last 1 1⁄3 innings for the Brewers, getting out of a jam in the eighth before having a clean ninth. However, the offense went down in order against the Diamondbacks’ bullpen as they took the loss.
The offense managed only two baserunners in the entire game: Turang’s fourth-inning single and Mitchell’s seventh-inning solo home run. They didn’t draw a single walk and struck out 15 times. Every starter except Turang struck out at least once.
The Brewers remain three games behind the Dodgers and Phillies for a bye following Thursday’s games. The Dodgers blew out the Marlins while the Phillies lost to the Mets.
It’s back to action right away tomorrow for game two of the series against the Diamondbacks. So far, it’s been a 2-2 split for the two teams in this series of seven games in 10 days. The Brewers will see Zac Gallen for the second time in a week. Meanwhile, Colin Rea returns to the starting rotation just a few days after recording his first career save. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. It will be on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network, as well as MLB Network for out-of-market fans.
