Tuesday brought a little more heat to the winter meetings
After a somewhat quiet day one of the Winter Meetings, action picked up more on day two. More deals and trades started coming in, including another high-profile free-agent signing. The day also included the MLB Draft Lottery. Here’s a round-up of what happened on the second day.
- The big move of the day came by the Yankees (no surprise there). They agreed to an eight-year, $218 million contract with left-handed pitcher Max Fried. It will be the largest guarantee in baseball history for a left-handed pitcher. It does not include any deferrals or opt-outs.
- The Guardians and Blue Jays agreed to a trade to send Gold Glove second baseman Andrés Giménez from Cleveland to Toronto. The Guardians will receive infielder Spencer Horwitz and reliever Nick Sandlin in return.
- The Blue Jays also have agreed with right-handed reliever Yimi García on a two-year, $15 million contract. He was traded from the Blue Jays to the Mariners at the trade deadline and is returning to the Blue Jays via free agency.
- The Cardinals are looking to trade Nolan Arenado and he is willing to help facilitate a trade. Arenado has a no-trade clause but would waive it to go to a winning team. His preference is to go to a contender but is willing to waive the clause for “more teams than you would think,” according to his agent.
- The Tigers are bringing in right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb on a one-year deal worth $15 million. It includes $1 million bonuses for reaching 140 and 150 innings.
- The Rangers are re-signing Nathan Eovaldi. They bring him back on a three-year, $75 million contract.
- The Rockies have agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million deal with second baseman Thairo Estrada.
- The Phillies are in agreement on a contract with free-agent reliever Jordan Romano.
- The White Sox are in agreement with former Cubs outfielder Mike Tauchman to a major league deal. He will make $1.95 million guaranteed with another $1 million in incentives. He’ll also earn an additional $250,000 if traded.
Not much happened on the Brewers end today, but here are the top notes from the day.
- Matt Arnold received the Baseball America Major League Executive of the Year award. Harrison wrote more about the honor earlier today.
- More information is coming out on the interest in Devin Williams. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, at least 10 teams have checked in with the Brewers on Williams.
- The Brewers posted their list of non-roster invitees. Adam McCalvy notes that Anthony Seigler, a catcher/second baseman, is also on the list.
- Early odds for the 2025 World Series winner are out, and the Brewers start at 40-1 odds. That ties them for the 16th-best odds with the Tigers and Royals. Only the Cubs have better odds in the NL Central at 30-1. The Cardinals (60-1), Reds (60-1), and Pirates (75-1) all have worse odds.
