Both players were drafted in 2021 and finished 2024 at Triple-A Nashville
The Milwaukee Brewers selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Logan Henderson and Chad Patrick on Tuesday morning, adding both players to the team’s 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft in December.
The Rule 5 Draft allows MLB teams to “draft” minor league players from other franchises for an opportunity in the majors. The draft requires teams to protect players if they were signed at age 18 or younger and haven’t been added to the 40-man roster within five seasons or if they were signed at age 19 or older and haven’t been added to the 40-man roster within four seasons.
Both Patrick and Henderson were drafted in 2021 and would therefore have been eligible to be selected in this year’s Rule 5 Draft in December.
Patrick, 26, was a fourth-round pick (No. 107 overall) by the Diamondbacks in 2021. He was traded to the Athletics in July 2023 for Jace Peterson and traded to the Brewers from the A’s in November 2023 in exchange for Abraham Toro.
In four minor league seasons, he’s made 68 appearances (60 starts) with a 4.06 ERA and 334 strikeouts over 312 1⁄3 innings. In 26 appearances (24 starts) with Triple-A Nashville in 2024, Patrick went 14-1 with a 2.90 ERA and 145 strikeouts across 136 1⁄3 innings.
Henderson, 22, was also drafted in the fourth round (No. 116 overall) by the Brewers out of McLennan Community College in Texas. Now the team’s No. 11 prospect, Henderson has made 44 starts across three seasons in the Brewers system.
In 2024, he rose from High-A Wisconsin to Nashville. Across 19 starts this year, he had a 3.32 ERA with 104 strikeouts in 81 1⁄3 innings.
With the Brewers’ 40-man roster now at 38, there’s still a chance more players are protected in Milwaukee’s system prior to today’s 5 p.m. CT deadline. Stay tuned for more updates.
