Chourio becomes the youngest player in MLB history to post a season with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases
Following a 13-2 blowout loss on Wednesday night, the goal for the Brewers going into tonight’s game was to put it behind them and play today. That’s exactly what they did. A day after allowing 13 runs, they shut out the Giants 3-0.
Frankie Montas was on his game tonight. After a few straight starts allowing three-plus runs, he didn’t allow any in six innings tonight. In total, he allowed four baserunners on two hits and two walks. He also had eight strikeouts.
It wasn’t without a bit of stress, though. The Giants had runners in scoring position in the fourth following back-to-back walks by Montas. A lineout from Jerar Encarnacion ended the threat. Another runner was in scoring position in the fifth after a Curt Casali double, but Montas escaped that as well. A couple of good defensive plays also helped keep the game scoreless.
However, the Brewers couldn’t get much going on offense in the first six innings. They only got one runner in scoring position over those innings, and that was Sal Frelick in the fifth. Hayden Birdsong rebounded from his last start against the Brewers, pitching five shutout innings.
The game went to the bullpens still tied at 0-0 after six innings. Following a scoreless inning by Erik Miller of the Giants, Camilo Doval came in for the seventh. Willy Adames started the inning off with a walk, then went to work on the bases. Three wild pitches from Doval allowed Adames to advance three times, and that put the Brewers on the board 1-0.

From there, it was Jackson Chourio stepping up again. After a one-out single from Brice Turang, Chourio entered the 20-20 club with his 20th home run of the season. He became the youngest player in MLB history to accomplish the feat.

The Brewers didn’t get another baserunner after that, but the bullpen made sure that they didn’t need one. Scoreless seventh and eighth innings by Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill kept the Giants in check. Ashby added on two strikeouts while Megill had three. Devin Williams took the ninth, and it was another night where Williams bent but did not break. He allowed a single to Mark Canha and a double to Encarnacion, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. However, he struck out Grant McCray and got a groundout from Patrick Bailey to end the game.
The numbers on offense don’t look the best tonight. The Brewers only had four hits and were outhit by the Giants, who had five. No Brewer reached base more than once. However, the Brewers made their hits and walks count and took advantage of some wild pitches to score their runs tonight.
Following the win, the Brewers head to Arizona for their first series of the season against the Diamondbacks. Freddy Peralta will lead off the series, facing Eduardo Rodriguez. First pitch is at 8:40 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin.
