Brewers look to take game three in San Francisco
The Brewers and Giants will play tonight in the third of a four-game set at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
After Milwaukee’s offense looked anemic in their series-opening loss on Monday, they bounced back in a big way on Tuesday night, when they put up 11 runs on their opponents en route to a blowout victory. Tonight, the Brewers will look to guarantee they’ll get no worse than a series split on the road against a quality opponent in a battle of aces, as Freddy Peralta will face off against Logan Webb.
Peralta has been effective through five starts this season, but his last couple of starts haven’t been particularly easy. In his last appearance, Peralta threw five shutout innings, but it took him 93 pitches to get there, and there was traffic on the bases all night as he allowed seven hits and a walk. The start before that was far from easy, as well, a game in which he pitched into the sixth inning but walked four and gave up four hits when a taxed Brewer bullpen probably forced Pat Murphy to leave him in the game an inning too long. Still, Peralta hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his starts this year, which gives him a sparkling 1.91 ERA. His FIP lags behind that number, but it’s still a respectable 3.13.
On the mound for San Francisco will be Logan Webb, the 28-year-old right-hander who has consistently been one of the best pitchers in the National League over the past four seasons, a stretch that includes a Cy Young runner-up performance in 2023. He’s off to another excellent start this year, as he leads the NL in FIP at 1.63 and sports a not-too-shabby 2.40 ERA. Webb, a control pitcher who gets a ton of ground balls, has also upped his strikeouts substantially this season; his mark of 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings is nearly two higher than in any of his other seasons (9.6 in 2021).
The struggling Joey Ortiz is back in the lineup after getting the night off yesterday, and the lineup beyond that looks about as you’d expect.
Another late one tonight, with first pitch at 8:45 p.m. CT on FanDuel Sports Network and the Brewers Radio Network.
