Division leaders clash in high-stakes matchup
The Brewers don’t have much time left to claim a first-round bye in the playoffs, but tonight begins a series that will give the Brewers just that opportunity.
The Philadelphia Phillies come to Milwaukee for a battle between division leaders, and potentially a contest over one of the top seeds in the National League.
Aaron Civale gets the nod, pitching against the Phillies for the first time in his career. He’s gone at least five innings in five of his last six starts with a 2.67 ERA, including a pair of seven-strikeout games. In that span, though, only one opponent was in the playoff race. The Phillies represent a daunting opponent, but Civale’s recent form sends him into the game with positive momentum. He’ll face off against Ranger Suárez for Philadelphia.
In the lineup, Jackson Chourio and Blake Perkins are perched atop the batting order. They’ll be joined in the grass by Sal Frelick.
Joey Ortiz will take his usual spot at third base. He’s been finding quite the groove lately, slashing .279/.380/.465 (139 wRC+) in the month of September. Across the infield, he’ll play alongside Willy Adames, Brice Turang, and Rhys Hoskins.
William Contreras is behind the dish again with Gary Sánchez sitting in the heart of the order at designated hitter.
First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
