Can Brewers kickstart their offense?
The Milwaukee Brewers were unable to get their offense going last night in a series-opening loss to the lowly Colorado Rockies. Frankie Montas, who had nine strikeouts through five no-hit innings, deserved a better fate: a Michael Toglia three-run homer in the sixth (after a fly ball that Jackson Chourio maybe should have caught) quickly flipped Montas’s evening. That was all the Rockies mustered for the whole game, but the Brewers’ sputtering offense was unable to match those three runs, and the game ended in a way it never should: at third base.
The Brewers will look to recover today. They should have plenty of opportunities, as lefty Ty Blach takes the mound for the Rockies while sporting a 6.65 ERA and 5.90 FIP in 67 2⁄3 innings this season. With the lefty on the mound, Pat Murphy is shuffling the Brewers’ lineup a bit to try to coax some more offense out of them: Chourio will lead off, with William Contreras in the two-hole (where he hasn’t hit since August 4) and Willy Adames batting third (where he has batted only twice since May 11). Right-handed power bats follow Adames, with Gary Sánchez batting fourth (as the DH) and Rhys Hoskins fifth.
Trying to keep the Rockies off the board will be Tobias Myers. He hasn’t been quite as sharp over his last four starts but he still hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a start since July 4. With Aaron Ashby having pitched all three relief innings on Friday and a day off on Monday, I’d expect the Brewers will have basically anyone aside from Ashby available out of the bullpen for the next two days.
First pitch today is at 6:10 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
