Brewers go for sweep in Oakland
The Brewers have bounced back from a tough series loss to the Cardinals to take the first two games of their three-game series in Oakland with the Athletics. They’ll look to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon in what may be the team’s final game in Oakland.
Former Athletic Frankie Montas starts for Milwaukee, his first appearance against the A’s since he was a rookie with the White Sox in 2015. In four starts with the Crew, Montas is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 21 strikeouts across 21 frames.
Opposing Montas is right-handed rookie Joey Estes, making his 18th start of the year. He’s 5-6 with a 4.44 ERA and 71 strikeouts across 95 1⁄3 innings this season.
Brice Turang leads things off for Milwaukee, followed by Jackson Chourio and William Contreras, who is the DH today. Jake Bauers bats fourth as Rhys Hoskins gets the day off, while Willy Adames bats fifth. Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins round out the outfield, Gary Sánchez is at catcher, and Joey Ortiz starts at third and bats ninth.
First pitch is set for 3:07 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
UPDATE: The Brewers have placed reliever Nick Mears on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 23, with right forearm inflammation. Left-hander Aaron Ashby was recalled from Triple-A to fill his roster spot.
Mears has struggled since being acquired from the Rockies at the trade deadline, making 11 appearances and allowing eight runs on 13 hits and two walks with 16 strikeouts across 10 2⁄3 innings. Ashby, still only 26, has trended in the other direction since being moved to the bullpen with the Sounds. While his season ERA with Nashville sits at 8.04, he’s allowed no runs in his last five appearances, spanning 6 2⁄3 innings while allowing just two hits and a walk with 14 strikeouts. He’ll provide another left-handed option out of the bullpen, joining Bryan Hudson and Jared Koenig.
