The Brewers have placed outfielder Christian Yelich on the 10-day injured list with a back injury, as catcher Gary Sánchez was reinstated from his IL stint to fill the roster spot.

Yelich exited Tuesday night’s game against the Cubs with a back injury, and it comes as no surprise that he’ll spend some time on the IL for the second time this season. He’s struggled with back injuries over the past several years, including an IL stint that kept him out for nearly a month earlier this year.
Yelich is hitting .315/.406/.504 (153 OPS+) with 11 homers, 42 RBIs, 44 runs, and 21 steals in 73 games this season. Per Adam McCalvy, Yelich didn’t seem to be in high hopes this morning as it’s unclear what the next steps are both for the near future and the long-term future. The length of his IL stay is unknown at this time.
An ominous discussion this morning with Christian Yelich, who used different language than the typical day-to-day nature of his back flares. He said the next step is to decide “what’s going to be the best for the near future and into the future.”

Sánchez, who signed with Milwaukee in February, has been shelved with a left calf strain since late June. In 51 games with the Crew this year, he’s hitting .218/.293/.401 (92 OPS+) with seven homers, 21 RBIs, and 18 runs scored. He’ll join Eric Haase as catcher depth for William Contreras, with potential for DH and first base duties as well.
