Milwaukee falls back to one game over .500 despite another strong outing from Chad Patrick
Chad Patrick went six innings today, allowing two runs and earning himself his first quality start. Most days, that’s going to be enough to get a win.
Unfortunately for Patrick, the Brewers were only able to manage a season-low three hits in today’s 3-1 loss. Despite winning their last three games before today, it’s been a rough week for the Brewers’ offense. Milwaukee is still averaging 4.85 runs a game on the season, but they haven’t scored more than five runs in over a week.
Admittedly, the Brewers have faced a lot of really good pitching recently. Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty and Severino all started games against Milwaukee this week. Things should get better moving forward — Milwaukee won’t have to face five front-end starters every week.
As for this game, not a lot to write home about other than Patrick, who I’m quickly falling in love with as a player. He’s not dominant (seven hits allowed today) or overpowering (93.1 average fastball velocity), but he knows how to get outs. According to Statcast, Patrick has allowed just three “barrels” — where the hitter squared the ball up — in his five appearances this season. He’s striking batters out and limiting walks and hard contact, which is leading to results.
We discussed on this week’s @BF_Pod that the way Chad Patrick was getting outs in his first few starts wasn’t sustainable, pointing specifically to his poor K/BB ratio.

Caleb Durbin had the Brewers’ only RBI today, on a groundout to A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson in the bottom of the third. Miguel Andujar got that run back for the A’s in the top of the fifth with an RBI double. After Severino blanked the Brewers in the bottom of that frame, Brent Rooker took Patrick deep to center for the lead.
The score remained 2-1 heading into the top of the ninth, when Joel Payamps gave up a bomb to catcher Shea Langeliers. Payamps has struggled badly this season (13 runs allowed this season in just 6.2 innings). He hadn’t pitched in a week, but his last two appearances both today were both meltdowns. According to Pat Murphy, that was apparently because he was tipping pitches.
Pat Murphy said pregame that Joel Payamps, who hasn’t pitched since last Saturday in Arizona, has been tipping pitches in his glove this year. That’s one of the items they’ve been working on while he’s been down.

Payamps only gave up the one hit, but it’s hard to commend him too much given that the hit was a 425+ foot tank. Hopefully his next appearance can serve as a true get right game.
Brice Turang and Sal Frelick each singled today, while Garrett Mitchell had the Brewers’ only extra base hit today and scored their only run. Everyone else went hitless, including the Yelich-Chourio-Contreras heart of the order.
The final game of the series will pit Jeffery Springs against rookie Logan Henderson, the Brewers’ number 12 prospect, in his major league debut. First pitch will be at 1:10, with live broadacasts available on FanDuel Sports Network Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
