Lower level affiliates near postseason as minor league seasons wrap up
Each week, I’ll be bringing you a roundup of the Brewers minor league affiliates, including score updates, key players, and more. Here is the week 23 roundup.
Triple-A Nashville
The Sounds took three of five against the Charlotte Knights (59-69 overall; 26-28 second half) before Sunday’s series finale was canceled due to rain. Nashville is now 69-61 overall and 31-24 in the second half, now 5.5 games behind Columbus for the International League West lead.
Wes Clarke and Isaac Collins led the offense this week with two homers each, as Clarke slashed .357/.438/.786 and Collins hit .438/.526/.813 with a team-high seven hits. Christian Arroyo homered and led the team with seven RBIs on six hits. As a team, the Sounds had a strong week on offense, hitting .295/.391/.494 with nine homers and 35 runs scored.
Mitch White had one of his best starts with the Sounds this season, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in a winning effort. Carlos F. Rodriguez went seven frames, allowing two runs and striking out six in a win. The Sounds pitching staff finished the week with a 6.30 ERA, striking out 38 across 40 innings.
The Sounds return to Nashville where they’ll welcome the Gwinnett Stripers (66-66 overall; 31-26 second half). Nashville is just 4-8 against Gwinnett this season.
Double-A Biloxi
The Shuckers had a disappointing 2-4 week against the Montgomery Biscuits (73-53 overall; 33-24 second half), falling to 60-63 overall and 30-26 in the second half, creating a 2.5-game gap at the top of the division.
Ernesto Martinez had a huge week, picking up eight hits including three homers and three doubles for a .364/.391/.909 line with eight RBIs and five runs scored. Adam Hall, Connor Scott, and Eric Brown Jr. each had five hits on the week, though Hall was the only one to bat above .300 with a .333/.375/.333 line. As a team, the Shuckers hit .211/.293/.351 with five homers and 20 runs scored.
K.C. Hunt, Nate Peterson, and Tate Kuehner each had solid starts this week, as both Peterson and Kuehner earned wins. Hunt went 6 ⅓ innings, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out six; Peterson went six innings, allowing no runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts; and Kuehner went five innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. James Meeker was also solid in relief, allowing just one unearned run across 2 ⅔ innings over three appearances. The pitching staff finished the week with a 6.50 ERA, striking out 54 across 54 innings.
The Shuckers head to Alabama for their last road trip of the year as they take on the Rocket City Trash Pandas (55-69 overall; 22-34 second half) for seven games, including a doubleheader on Tuesday. Biloxi is 9-2 against the Pandas this season.
High-A Wisconsin
The Timber Rattlers had a disappointing 1-5 week against the Quad Cities River Bandits (64-61 overall; 34-26 second half), falling to 74-51 overall and 32-27 in the second half.
Ramón Rodriguez had a huge week offensively, hitting .467/.529/.733 with seven hits including a homer and a double. Jesus Chirinos and Luis Lara each had seven hits offensively, while Eduarqui Fernandez swiped three bags. As a team, Wisconsin hit .224/.282/.296 with two homers and 17 runs scored.
Bayden Root led the pitching staff with two solid relief appearances, striking out seven and allowing no runs while working around traffic across 3 ⅓ innings. Alexander Cornielle turned in another solid start, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts across four frames. As a staff, the Rattlers finished the week with a 6.00 ERA, striking out 62 batters over 54 innings.
The Rattlers head to Iowa to take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels (64-60 overall; 27-33 second half) in the last series of the regular season. Wisconsin is 6-3 against Cedar Rapids this season.
Single-A Carolina
The Mudcats went 4-1 against the Lynchburg Hillcats (65-58 overall; 28-29 second half), improving to 75-48 overall and 34-24 in the second half as they head into the final week of the regular season.
Eric Bitonti picked up a pair of homers and four RBIs this week, hitting .333/.474/.800. Miguel Briceno led the team with seven hits in just 12 at-bats, driving in four and slashing .583/.538/.750. As a team, the Mudcats hit .256/.345/.335 with three homers and 28 runs scored.
Daniel Corniel went 6 ⅓ innings in his start this week, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three. Jason Woodward struck out a team-high six batters despite pitching just 2 ⅓ innings as he allowed no runs on no hits and a walk. Bryan Rivera worked six innings in a bulk relief appearance, allowing an unearned run and striking out four. As a pitching staff, the Mudcats had a 3.27 ERA and struck out 39 over 44 innings.
The Mudcats welcome the Delmarva Shorebirds (50-75 overall; 27-33 second half) in their final regular-season series of the year. Carolina is 9-3 against Delmarva this year.
