Eric Brown Jr. has huge weekend for Biloxi
Each week, I’ll be bringing you a roundup of the Brewers minor league affiliates, including score updates, key players, and more. Here is the week 17 roundup.
Triple-A Nashville
The Sounds dropped two of three to the Norfolk Tides (46-49 overall; 10-10 second half), falling to 50-46 overall with a 12-9 second-half record, ½ game behind Columbus for first place in the International League West.
Chris Roller picked up the only homer of the weekend set, while Brewer Hicklen led the offense with four hits. Owen Miller also went 3-for-10 with a steal. As a team, the Sounds hit .266/.361/.383 with one homer and 15 runs scored.
Kevin Herget picked up the win with 1 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief, striking out three. DL Hall allowed two runs in 2 ⅔ innings in a rehab appearance, striking out one while allowing three hits and two walks. Joe Ross got hit hard in his rehab start, allowing eight runs on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts in four innings. The Sounds pitching staff struggled to a 9.86 ERA on the weekend, striking out 19 across 21 innings.
The Sounds return home to take on the Charlotte Knights (43-50 overall; 10-9 second half). Nashville went 5-1 against Charlotte in late May.
Double-A Biloxi
The Shuckers beat up on the Montgomery Biscuits, winning two of three – including a 19-1 victory Saturday. Biloxi is now 14-7 in the second half and an even 44-44 overall this season, leading the Southern League South division by two games in the second half.
Eric Brown Jr. had a huge weekend for Biloxi, picking up a pair of homers and seven RBIs. Nick Kahle, Ernesto Martinez, Carlos D. Rodriguez, and Connor Scott each added homers, as Scott finished the weekend with five RBIs and Martinez led the team with five hits. As a team, the Shuckers hit .265/.400/.520 with a league-best six homers and 26 runs.
Brett Wichrowski turned in a solid start, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts across six innings in a winning effort. Shane Smith worked three scoreless in his start, striking out four. The pitching staff finished the weekend with a 2.67 ERA, striking out 38 in 27 innings.
The Shuckers head to Pensacola to take on the Blue Wahoos (49-40 overall; 11-10 second half) for six games. Biloxi is 5-12 against Pensacola this season.
High-A Wisconsin
The Timber Rattlers stayed hot, winning two of three against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (51-37 overall; 14-10 second half) to improve to 58-31 overall and 16-7 in the second half.
Ramón Rodriguez picked up the lone homer of the weekend for Wisconsin, hitting a trio of extra-base hits and driving in three runs. Jheremy Vargas went 3-for-3 in his only game of the weekend while Matthew Wood led the team with four hits in 12 at-bats. As a team, Wisconsin hit .220/.269/.320 with one homer and 10 runs scored.
On the pitching side, Tate Kuehner went five scoreless innings in his start, striking out five in the win. Mark Manfredi, Patricio Quino, Bayden Root, Stiven Cruz, and Tyler Wehrle all worked scoreless appearances as well, combining for 11 ⅓ innings and striking out seven. As a staff, the Rattlers finished the weekend with a 2.77 ERA and striking out 25 batters over 26 innings.
The Rattlers head across the state to take on the Beloit Sky Carp (43-44 overall; 13-11 second half) for the third series this season. Wisconsin is 9-3 against Beloit this year.
Single-A Carolina
The Mudcats took all three games against the Lynchburg Hillcats (48-42 overall; 11-13 second half) to improve to 53-35 overall and 12-11 in the second half.
Top 10 prospects Cooper Pratt and Yophery Rodriguez both slugged a homer this weekend, with both also leading the team with three hits and two RBIs. Pratt also picked up a triple and a pair of steals, while Yhoswar Garcia swiped two bags of his own. As a team, the Mudcats hit .225/.349/.408 with two homers and nine runs scored.
On the mound, Josh Knoth had a strong bounce-back start, allowing just one walk and no hits over four scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Josh Timmerman worked three scoreless innings in his start, striking out two, while Dikember Sanchez picked up a win in relief with two scoreless innings. As a pitching staff, the Mudcats had a 2.05 ERA, striking out 23 batters in 22 innings.
The Mudcats head to Salem to take on the Red Sox (48-42 overall; 14-10 second half) for six games. Carolina is 6-3 against Salem this season.
