Brewers fall to Reds in annual Spring Breakout game, 9-7

Milwaukee’s top prospects can’t overcome five run third inning

The Brewers have been on a roll this spring, as today’s victory over the Guardians extended their winning streak to seven games. Unfortunately, that momentum didn’t carry over into this evening’s Spring Breakout prospect showcase. Milwaukee gave up eight runs in the first three innings, eventually losing 9-7 to the division rival Cincinnati Reds.

RHP Jacob Misiorowski, who started the game for the Brewers, gave up three runs before being pulled with two outs in the second inning. He also recorded a wild pitch, a hit by pitch, and a balk. All things considered, not the best outing.

Milwaukee knows he’s not ready yet — the Brewers just sent Misiorowski down to minor league camp. With that being said, he still has all the potential in the world. Misiorowski still managed to notch four strikeouts in his 1 ²⁄₃ innings.

Bishop Letson, the next Brewer pitcher to face more than a batter, gave up five runs (four earned) while recording just one out. He also walked two batters, letting the inning snowball a bit. Letson’s definitely not ready yet either but wasn’t expected to be anytime soon. He’s still 20 years old and had a 3.13 ERA last year with Carolina.

Most of the other Brewers pitching prospects pitched well. Craig Yoho didn’t give up a hit, as per usual. He’s probably outgrown a game like this.

Tyson Hardin went two innings, only giving up one hit while striking out three. The Brewers’ No. 2 pitching prospect, Robert Gasser, is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and didn’t pitch.

The Brewers’ top hitting prospects also gave us plenty of reason to be excited about the future. While no Brewers prospect had a multi-hit day, everybody in the starting lineup contributed in some way.

Jesus Made went 1-for-3 with a single. He didn’t look overmatched at all, which is no small feat for a 17 year old. I’m excited to see how he develops after a full season in the minors.

Cooper Pratt went hitless but walked and used his speed to score the first run of the game for the Brewers.

Luis Lara had a really impressive at-bat in the third inning, working the count full before slashing a double down the third base line. He has a mature game for a 20 year old, and I’m excited to see how it develops this season.

Eric Bitonti drew a couple walks and looked comfortable at the plate despite not recording a hit. Yophery Rodriguez and Jose Anderson, both top 30 prospects in the organization, also flashed some potential — as did less heralded prospects Matt Wood and Dylan O’Rae:

Overall, plenty of encouraging signs from Milwaukee’s top prospects despite the loss. The full box score for the game can be found here.
