Jackson Chourio extends hitting streak to 10 games in loss
The Brewers were unable to mount any late offense against a struggling Rockies bullpen as they lost the series finale in Denver by a final of 4-3.
Colorado got things going right away against Tobias Myers, as a Charlie Blackmon single, a sacrifice bunt, and a ground-rule double by Ryan McMahon brought home a run for a 1-0 lead.
After a 1-2-3 inning that included a single by Sal Frelick before a double play off the bat of Rhys Hoskins in the second, the Rockies extended the lead to 3-0 with a walk, single, and two-RBI double from Blackmon. Jackson Chourio made the throw from right field into second base, allowing the second run to score as Colorado opened the gap early.
Myers settled down to prevent any further damage in the third, and the Brewers responded against Cal Quantrill in the fourth. Christian Yelich, Frelick, and Chourio all walked to load the bases with two outs for Andruw Monasterio. Monasterio blooped a single into short center, allowing both Frelick and Chourio to score. With runners at second and third for Eric Haase, he popped out as Quantrill preserved the 3-2 lead.
Myers allowed an infield single by Nolan Jones to open the fifth, and he advanced on a throwing error by Monasterio, but he set down the next three in order to keep the deficit at one.
The Brewers knotted the game up at 3-3 in the top of the sixth as Hoskins walked and Chourio hit a rocket of a double off the right-center field wall to bring him home.
Unfortunately for the Crew, Jake Cave hit his first homer of the season in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 4-3. Chourio made a nice throw to get Michael Toglia out at second as he tried to extend a single into a double, but Milwaukee couldn’t push any more runs across, getting runners at the corners in the eighth before Garrett Mitchell struck out to end the rally. The top of the Brewers’ order went down 1-2-3 in the ninth as Jalen Beeks picked up the save for the Rockies.
It wasn’t a game to write home about, as the Brewers split four games at Coors Field with the 4-3 loss. Milwaukee was led by Contreras and Monasterio, who each had two hits. Monasterio drove in two while Chourio had the only other RBI as Milwaukee went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Myers went six innings in the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Rob Zastryzny and Joel Payamps each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
The Brewers now head to Los Angeles where they’ll take on the Dodgers for three games beginning Friday night. Aaron Civale will make his Brewers debut opposite Tyler Glasnow for the Dodgers on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 9:10 p.m. CT.
