The Brewers reported after the game that Civale, who went just three innings on 68 pitches, had hamstring soreness and will undergo tests
Entering the season, the Brewers had a depleted pitching staff, with multiple pitchers on the injured list and Milwaukee down to just three official “starters” on the roster in the form of Freddy Peralta, Nestor Cortes, and Aaron Civale.
After a disappointing series that saw both Cortes and Civale get hit hard over the weekend, Milwaukee now has more devastating injury news: Civale left after three innings and 68 pitches on Sunday with what the team characterized as “left hamstring cramping.”
Per MLB.com’s Bill Ladson, Pat Murphy had this to say after Sunday’s loss:
“I trust this team and I trust people in the room,” Murphy said. “They are strong enough to get through this time. We knew it would be tough with all those injuries. I trust that we will be able to get through it.”
With Brandon Woodruff not set to return until late April at the earliest and Jose Quintana still in the process of building up after a late start this spring, Civale’s injury comes as a major negative just four days into the season. The team will conduct several tests over the coming days to determine the severity as they try to stitch together a pitching rotation that can get them through their upcoming homestand against the Royals and Reds.
