Top Pitching Performance of the Week
There weren’t many bright spots for the Brewers’ pitchers on Opening Weekend, but Freddy Peralta was solid in his first performance of the season. He only went five innings with his 93 pitches, but he still racked up eight strikeouts on the day. He surrendered two runs, each on a solo home run, but it was the best start the Brewers got in their opening series. He tallied 14 swing-and-misses, according to Baseball Savant, including five whiffs on 13 swings against his changeup. Last year, Peralta used his changeup less often than his slider, but the changeup was his second-most used pitch in this game.
Top Hitting Performance of the Week
Sal Frelick had a great start to his season with a 5-for-11 performance, along with a walk and just one strikeout (forget about his average exit velocity; we don’t need to discuss that). Frelick’s performance this year could be vital in determining the offense’s potential. He’s had excellent contact numbers in the past, but the ball simply hasn’t fallen for hits as often as it might. If he hits for a high average, it will create necessary run-scoring opportunities for the outfielder.
Injury Notes & Roster Moves
- In the most breaking injury news, starter Aaron Civale had left hamstring cramping during his start Sunday in New York. Tests are scheduled for the next few days as the team hopes it’s nothing too severe.
- Outfielder Brewer Hicklen was traded to the Detroit Tigers for cash on Friday.
- Brandon Woodruff was placed on the 15-day injured list as he is still recovering from surgery. He’s listed as possibly being available for a return in May.
- Nick Mears, Tobias Myers, and Aaron Ashby were placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 24. Myers and Mears are both expected to return in mid-April while Ashby’s return is TBD.
- Blake Perkins was added to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 24 for his right shin injury. He’s expected to return at some point in May if his recovery continues as planned.
- Jose Quintana was optioned to the ACL Brewers after spring training to continue ramping up his pitch count. He should be set to make his Brewers debut later this month.
- Tyler Black is expected to miss 6-8 weeks after suffering a right hamate fracture.
- Longer-term injuries for the Brewers include DL Hall, J.B. Bukauskas, and Robert Gasser. Hall is expected to return no earlier than late May with a left lat strain; Bukauskas is out until 2026 after undergoing right lat surgery; and Gasser is targeting a second-half 2025 return after undergoing Tommy John surgery last June.
